How to Solve Long Division without Remainder

To find the average speed, divide distance by time. Distance is the dividend. Time is the divisor. Speed is the quotient.

  1. Divide the first digit of the dividend by the divisor.
  2. Multiply the quotient by the divisor.
  3. Subtract the product from the number above it.
  4. Bring down the next digit.
  5. Repeat Steps 1–4 until all digits have been used.
  6. If the final digit brought down is a zero, there is no remainder.

Example

Formula 'Speed = Distance ÷ Time,' with 162 meters and 18 seconds as the given values.

  1. Divide 162 by 18.
  2. Multiply 9 by 18.
  3. Subtract 162 from 162.
  4. Bring down the next digit if there is one.
  5. Repeat Steps 1–4 until all digits have been used.
  6. If the final digit brought down is a zero, there is no remainder.
  7. The average speed is 9 meters per second.

  5. Repeat Steps 1–4 until all digits have been used.
  6. If the final digit brought down is larger than zero, but less than the divisor, it is a remainder.

Example

Formula 'Speed = Distance ÷ Time,' with 163 meters and 18 seconds as the given values.

  1. Divide 163 by 18.
  2. Multiply 9 by 18.
  3. Subtract 162 from 163.
  4. Bring down the next digit if there is one.
  5. Repeat Steps 1–4 until all digits have been used.
  6. The answer is 9 with a remainder of 1.
  7. The answer is greater than 9 meters per second but less than 10 meters per second, so the average speed is about 9 meters per second.
